Beachwood Apicoectomy

Why would I need endodontic surgery?

Generally, a root canal is all that is needed to save teeth with injured pulp from extraction. Occasionally, this non-surgical procedure will not be sufficient to heal the tooth and Dr. Katz, Dr. Bonar or Dr. Segal will recommend surgery. Endodontic surgery can be used to locate fractures or hidden canals that do not appear on x-rays but still manifest pain in the tooth. Damaged root surfaces or the surrounding bone may also be treated with this procedure. The most common surgery used to save damaged teeth is an apicoectomy or root-end resection.

What is an apicoectomy?

The video above illustrates this simple procedure. An incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the bone and surrounding inflamed tissue. The damaged tissue is removed along with the end of the root tip. A root-end filling is placed to prevent reinfection of the root and the gum is sutured. The bone naturally heals around the root over a period of months restoring full function.

4. Healing Complete

What should I expect after an apicoectomy?

Following the procedure, there may be some discomfort or slight swelling while the incision heals. This is normal for any surgical procedure. To alleviate any discomfort, appropriate pain medication will be recommended. If you have pain that does not respond to medication, please call our office.

Patient Review by Katie K

After a very painful situation, Dr. Katz fit me in that very day for a root canal. He was honest about the expectations for the tooth and I knew immediately I was in good hands. He did everything he could to make sure I was not in pain. My dad is a retired dentist and I asked Dr. Katz to explain the situation to him afterwards--he called him right away and talked for 20 minutes. When my current dentist saw the x-rays on what he did, she said she was amazed. He invented a treatment basically to get me out of pain right on the spot for my very unique situation. In the end, I'm going to have to have the tooth pulled (which he said was a distinct possibility) and he's not even charging me for the root canal. This is "old school" values, expertise, and cutting-edge technology all in one place. I would HIGHLY recommend this guy!

Patient Review by Al D

I was very impressed with the calm, caring and respectful approach throughout the office. Everything was explained before it was done, whether by Dr. Katz or his able assistant. I felt no discomfort during the procedure and very minimal discomfort at the injection sites after the anesthetic had worn off. During both check-in and check-out, staff was very professional and helpful.
